Silencers, machine guns, and short barreled rifles are all legal to possess. The National Firearms Act governs all Class III/NFA items. The process is simple and easy.
Owning NFA Items:
As long as you live in a state that allows ownership of NFA items, which is most states, then it is a matter of filling out a few pieces
of paperwork, paying a $200.00 tax per NFA item , and waiting for the paperwork to be processed. If you are 21 or older you may own silencers, AOW’s, short barreled rifles, or machine guns.
- Register the item in your name as an individual is one way to purchase. The only advantage to this is not having to pay for the costs of a trust. The disadvantage is that only you, no one else, may possess the NFA item.
- Register the item to an NFA Trust. It is very simple and only takes a few minutes on the phone with a lawyer. The average costs for this is about $400.00 for these legal services. The major advantages to a trust is you can put more that one person on the trust, as a trustee, allowing friends and family to be able to possess your NFA items. You can put as many items in the trust as you like.
Process:
Pay for the item. We put the order in. We will keep your item in storage until ATF/NFA completes their paperwork. We will start your paperwork process. You need to fill out a ATF Form 4 .
